He said the resources of Hong Kong's cultural heritage are diminishing day by day. As one of the world's international metropolis, Hong Kong unexpectedly does not have a bronze statute of any cultural artist. Other international capital cities such as London, Paris and New York have many bronze statues of philosophers, scholars and artists. In Paris, the French have banknotes and a bronze statue of the Little Prince, the character from their renowned novel. Why couldn't Hong Kong have a bronze statute of 'Little Prince-like' Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing? The reason lies in the corrupt philosophy of the Chinese saying, "Actors are heartless, whores non-righteous". Generally most Chinese rarely associate the actor with the performing arts. In China, the general consensus is leadership by the government; thus bronze statues erected are usually those of prominent political figures. Over the past 100 years reforms in China were extremely difficult. The reason for China's sheltered and outdated image stems from the fact that whenever someone proposes some innovatory ideas, invariably there will be people who will oppose them with their ninety-nine reasons. In his programme Tao Jie also commented that from a metaphysics point of view, Leslie Cheung, Roman Tam and James Wong were no mere mortals. According to Tao Jie, they are heavenly bodies sent down to perform some earthly duties. After their respective mission had been accomplished, they were summoned back to heaven by the Almighty. Note: Tao Jie is the pen-name of Chip Tsao. He received his university education in the UK and worked for the BBC after obtaining a Master's degree in English literature from the University of London. He was twice a winner of Young Writers Awards for poetry in Hong Kong in the 1970s. He is now a columnist and commentator for Commercial Radio Hong Kong. |
