The hard way…and it's never been easy by Edward LamI have always thought that Gorgor has a bit of hard luck. The word "hard" carries the meaning of being tough, rigid and inflexible. At this point, some of you may disagree with me - doesn't gorgor have a versatile image? Hasn't he had a great many different roles in movies? Of course, that was not what I meant. On the contrary, I think he has been working too hard, so much so that in a way he spoiled us all. We keep demanding more from him to satisfy our insatiable appetite. "What else do you have? Show us."This indirectly triggers gorgor's anxiety over his performance, as reflected in some of the new attempts he made. Being obviously too eager to achieve targeted results is essentially trying too hard. When things are done rigidly and not given a chance of taking their natural course, the end result will just be like picking a fruit that is still too green - its taste is certainly different from the ripe ones. I think that somehow, being "hard" is a special personal feature of gorgor: it is a unique quality you will only find in him and nobody else. Even though the knowledge I have about him comes almost entirely from indirect sources (except the one year in which we spent in the same school and the few day we had in Berlin) and my own personal projections, I still tend to believe that most of the time, he is the "tough" type. Without a "tough" or unbending kind of temperament, he would not have remained so spontaneous with his emotions (even at times when he flares up) as he has always been. Without a very hard spine, he could not have carried his mission as "the artist of the generation" and the reputation of "the evergreen tree in show business" on his back. Of course, gorgor will tell you that his career in the show business has never come easy to him the way Cinderella has gotten her glass slippers. There has never been any fairy or prince to rescue him. There were lots of hard times, though, in the first half of his way to stardom. His hard work topped the others (Danny Chan, for instance) by many, many folds. The Sun (09/05/2001) Special thanks to Corinna for the English translation. |
